Diesel Hi, my name's Diesel. I run this site. I started it as a lark, because all of the other humor blog directories I found sucked. Anyway, my own humor blog is Mattress Police - Antisocial Commentary. It's listed over there on the upper right. That's what's known in the biz as a "conflict of interest." Deal with it.

Bee's Musings

The Frogster here. This week I'm taking a look at Bee's Musings, a blog which I had not hitherto visited.

We again start with the template. I suspect that template plays a bigger role in these reviews than indicated by the chart above, because it seems as though some of the reviewers get a template stuck in their craw and it becomes an albatross that squawks through even those parts of the review that are not (ideally) template related.

The page is pretty busy. While I like the template, the red text in the side-bar gets lost against the background.

The blog has original design (i think)..but the fonts are set at dark tones, and makes my eyes strained.

Biggest complaint? Uh... not a fan of black backgrounds. Oh sure, this one is rather artistic, making it significantly more interesting to peruse, but still... black?? SO not easy on the eyes.

On the downside, the layout reminded me of some emo 14 year old that wears his girlfriend's jeans. Thankfully I kept reading as I'm sure you wear your own.
One reviewer disagreed vehemently, however:
I do want her to design my blog. She's excellent on the graphics department and her tag line was fun too.
As far as content goes, the reviewers had some positive things to say:
I actually thought this blog was pretty darn good. Bee has a very fun sense of humor, and the ability to express it in ways that are charming and amusing.

It's a good read and amusing in its own right without being forced.

This is a personal journal, with really well-written and sometimes amusing life-as-she-sees it posts. And for that reason alone, I put her in my bookmarks for future reading.

Its obvious she's a dedicated and prolific author.

Because she doesn't take herself too seriously, she's funny-yet-not-overly-self-indulgent, which I find endearing.
And some middle-of-the-road things to say:
I wouldn't say this is a "funny blog." And by that I mean, that the objective of the blog is to amuse.

Another one of those hey-check-out-my-snarky-and-slightly-naughty-riffing-about-the-kooky-day-to-day-happenings-in-my-life blog. Not bad for its type.

The posts are humorous--not laugh out loud but kind of funny.

The writing was good, the content interesting enough and while it's witty and sometimes made me smile, it just wasn't all that laugh out loud funny or even, really, a Ha! funny.

Mostly a diary-type. Just not my kind of humor I suppose.

Two bits --the cartoon and the old lady made me laugh, other stuff felt tired and uninspired.

OK reading, not overly funny.

You said some interesting things that kept me reading but it didn't grab me enough to continuously come back.

The content is definitely a creed of Specific humor , that is, cannot be enjoyed by the whole population in all.....The cast of characters is a good idea, since there's no way you can know what the heck she's talking about without it. With it, and it's only slightly more bearable. Not really that "funny" for me.
Bee's blog fit it the "Diary Blog That Is Sometimes Funny" category for most of our reviewers, as opposed to the "Humor Blog" category. But, as one reviewer stated, one reviewer's diary is another reviewer's humor. I would say that going for the official "Humor Blog" category would take some of the character away from this blog. So, not every post is not side-splittingly funny. It's still a good read. I think that lightening up the template a little will help. Remember, a lot of blog surfers spend most of their time looking at computers, and my guess is that "Plain Jane But Legible" will beat out "Clever But Optically Tiring" any day.

Nicely done, Bee. Keep on blogging.

WTFis

WTFis got a solid review from our reviewers. Some folks weren't terribly keen on the author's liberal use of profanity, but it doesn't seem to have hurt his too badly. The consensus seemed to be that the writer (I can't seem to figure out what his name is) comes across more like a standup comic than a humor writer. Whether this is good or bad, I'm not sure.

Some quotes from the reviewers:
How do you make choosing kitty treats so damn funny? I loved it!

Well written. Could do without the swearing, as it adds nothing to the humor of his pieces, but a worthwhile stop in the blogosphere for some darker humor.

There's some serious "funny" here, and i actually laughed out loud on more than one occasion. That said, as long as the template is black and the content is in that freaking shade of brilliant white, I won't be reading it on a regular basis, because, really... do I NEED new reading glasses? I do not.

If you like being annoyed visually and mentally this is for you.

Comments, not so much entries or posts, so it's a better description are 'shock humour'

Made me laugh, which most can't. A little scatological, but these days, with everyone fearing being censored, it's a nice change of pace.

Some of the stories could be funny if a multitude of swears weren't used as a means of being funny. Swearing doesn't usually equal funny. There's potential but I think a reformatting of the way the stories are told is in order for it to be really funny. A couple of the quick little blurbs were quite funny, especially the one about pregnancy. The one about Sudafed could have been really funny if words other than swears were used in an attempt to make it funny. It almost seems that the writer does stand-up, or wants to but considering you can't use body language in writing, the formats need to be changed to tailor to that. I liked the layout of the site; very aesthetically pleasing.

The make-up sex post was fantastic but the rest of it was just gross. If you are going to talk about your masturbation habits you better have a really great post to back it up. He didn't. I enjoyed his link list though - some good sites there.

While I do enjoy a well placed f-bomb, there seems to be a lot of unnecessary cursing and vulgarity going on in this blog. Frankly, blogs with black templates and white text that feature people ranting and cursing about trips to Duane Reade and Debbie Gibson went out of style years ago. There's a lot of anger & sexual frustration going on here and frankly, none of it is particularly funny. Unless you're a huge Dennis Miller fan, avoid this blog like the plague.

This blog is taken up by mostly very short posts interspersed occasionally with much larger ones. A lot of interesting humour, mostly complaining about everyday events and such.

The writing definitely is made up of a unique and likable style. Humour is a little weak, but the delivery is great.
I have a bit of a bias against humor writers who use a lot of profanity myself, because it seems like a crutch to me. But hey, sometimes there's no substitute for a well placed f-bomb. I'm actually surprised more reviewers didn't complain about the template; maybe black is back in again? Or maybe people are just sick of saying the same thing every time. But of course, those are just quibbles anyway; the important thing is that WTFis delivers the goods.

Nice work, Mr. WTFis.

See Mike Draw

We have a winner.

Mike is a damned good cartoonist, and that's all there is to it. Discovering blogs like this is what this site is all about.

Some quotes from folks who share my opinion:
I admire anyone who can come up with art work AND jokes at the same time.

Great cartoons! Several times I laughed out loud.

I liked this site. Witty, funny, and a little naughty.

Yeah -- I totally loveloveLOVED this blog. I noticed it "creeping" up the Humor-blogs side bar last week, and so was forced to check out the competition, and, I'm pleased to say I was NOT disappointed. Very Original and Clever. And Funny... Very Funny!

High points for originality. Newspaper cartoons basically suck these days, so it's nice to see Mike is able to carry the torch from previous greats like Watterson and Larson. Not that he's in their league yet, mind you, but by comparison to what's being published these days he seems like he's that talented. The Cookie Monster cartoon absolutely killed me. Cartoons can be very hit and miss, what I like about SMD is that he has significantly more hits.

A blog containing nothing but original cartoons? And they're funny? I am totally on board for this. Eat your heart out New Yorker, there's some comedic gold at work on this guy's website.

Oh man, I loved this. I'm so glad I had to review it because maybe i would never have found it otherwise. The site is nice and simple, and maybe it's because I'm an illustrator myself but I think the idea of a cartoon blog is great. Especially because I found the cartoons to be nicely drawn, neat, and very funny. Ummmmm....no I really don't have any constructive criticism. It was a great blog.

Really funny cartoons! This guy might actually be employable. Doesn't post as often as a lot of writing bloggers, but his work is professional looking and I like his twisted sense of humor.
I'll be going back to this one. Mind you, I still like the written word better, but this one's pretty good.

These short comics are absolutely hilarious. The only reason I gave this a low score for "writing" is because it is, in all fairness, a comic blog with a load of images as opposed to writing. Having said that, it is well laid out and easy to navigate. The humor is top notch and yes, I'll definately be returning.

The best cartoon is the Pinnochio, 'please don't fist me' caroon. Classic!

Another blog that I have added to my feed. I love "simple" layouts on blogs so a big plus for that. Your cartoons are hilarious and just as demented as I am! I love them all! I'm definitely coming back for more on this one!

Nice blog. Love the comics and I'd love to see them in my local newspaper.

Warning: Do NOT read this blog is you are recovering from the stomach flu, as it may cause recurrences of vomiting from excessive laughter. Otherwise, read this bloody hilarious blog on a daily basis!

Funny Funny Funny.
Snapshot Funny.

Hilarity in a nanosecond, goldfish would piss themselves at this.

Love it.

Little. Yellow. Different. I like it a lot.
And a few from people who are apparently on drugs or still getting over breaking up with Kid Rock. Maybe both.
Funny but creeped me out with some of the R rated cartoons. Just didn't need it in my day.

I'm not really a fan of picture blogs. Or cartoons. But this blog isn't awful, and when the author does write, its quite funny.

Man, I wanted to like this...

Very hard medium to make funny - two or three panels is an awfully tight space to birth a joke.

Unfortunately, it seemed too hard for our author. The material just didn't work for me.

Nothing too funny really, resorting to boner jokes is kind of a cop out in my opinion.
...Demonstrating that even if you write and draw 100% original cartoons that are funnier than B.C. or Blondie has been in 20 years, you're still not going to break 75 with our reviewers.

Great stuff, Mike. Keep it up. Remember us when you're famous.

Renal Failure

I'll admit to being partial to Renal Failure because the author has been a strong proponent of the cause of Huey Lewis, but this blog received an excellent review without me having to step in and fudge the scores. Which I wouldn't do anyway, because it would be wrong.

Some quotes from our reviewers:
Well done. I loved the Huey Lewis post - really nailed it.

The site looks pretty ordinary and the writing didn't do much for me. Funny in parts but the parts were spaced a little too distant from each other.

Put it in my bookmarks, and immediately forwarded the post about Philly cheesesteaks to friends.

The little semi-cyborg dog laughed to see such fun and the ninja on the roof ran away with an anonymous thug.. all good

Anyone who quotes Kids in the Hall is OK by me. What I like about RF is that the post topics are so completely unique and different than most other blogs out there. I'm not a huge fan of the fact that he name drops all his friends, but after a few posts you kind of get used to it and figure out "who's who" as they become characters in the overall story. Overall, it's a lot of fun and I'll be back.

This blog is funny and well thought out. I especially like the description of the characters in the Renal Failure Players section. A lot of effort has been put into this blog, and it hasn't been wasted! Well done!

I still haven't figured this blog out. I think it might be funny once you get to know it, but at first glance it is just strange.

Visually very boring. The humor is good at points, but pretty random. Some posts are good, others not.
I would certainly go along with the "visually boring" comment. This blog definitely needs some help in the design department. The somewhat off-kilter writing style is also a bit out of sync with the bland design, so that I can definitely see why someone would say that "I think it might be funny once you get to know it, but at first glance it is just strange." The "name-dropping" threw me a little at first too.

My suggestion: Get a newer, more fun-looking template. If you're going to refer to people like "Tina the Lesbian" or "Ninja Vicki" on a regular basis, put something on the sidebar identifying who they are, like a cast of characters. I don't care if it's a photo or a caricature or what, but since these people seem to be recurring characters, give first time visitors a clue who they are.

Also, WTF is with the name? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it's not "RF's Ruminations" or "Musings of a Kidney Transplant Victim", but "Renal Failure" is a little macabre for a humor blog, isn't it?

Anyway, whatever you do, keep the writing just as it is. It's original and often quite funny. Great job, RF.

Seven Seeds

The Frogster here, pitching in at the review blog. I am NOT a reviewer, I am merely a number cruncher. This week I crunched the numbers for Seven Seeds, a relative newcomer to the humor-blogs family.

You'd think the reviewers were vampires at Miami Beach without sunglasses to read some of the quotes about the template:

The print on this blog is impossible to read against that green background. And the stripes on the side just add to the chaos. All in all, a very ugly layout.

I found her template, while attractive enough, to be moderately difficult to read. Too colorful? Not exactly... actually, it's pretty. Mostly I don't think the font color works well with the background. Definitely not as bad as the insidious white print on black combo so many are fond of, but still a bit..."squint-worthy".

I'm still holding back the nausea and the now raging headache I have from the atrocious background. Oh my freakin' god, I've never gotten motion sick from a website before. And I kid you not, My head is screaming. The wrap is just a shade too light for the font color and the background, I couldn't scroll slow enough to easy my queasy stomach. Thank god I bought some ginger pieces today. Now I just have to find some Tylenol and I'm good to go.

Remember, just because you'd find a particular color scheme attractive for a bathroom, that doesn't mean it's a good idea for a blog. I happen to know Kadi has switched her template up since the reviewers stopped by. As far as the content, our reviewers were all over the board:
I actually found this blog yesterday before being asked to review it and I found it hilarious.

Well written, humorous and interesting, just missing the X factor to bring me back daily.

I'll probably read it everyday.

The writing is well worth checking out and some of you may well enjoy these tales by a mommy blogger (I believe that is now the collective term for it) but sadly, it's not what would appeal to me.

A nice family blog. I can't come up with any specific complaints. Easy to read, and enjoyable for its day in the life style.

I've seen too many semi-funny blogs written by housefraus to be overly impressed with this one.

The parent-kid content was well done and earned a few honest grins.

Beat points to death. Walking on jokes makes them less funny. Her stories have good punch but they are overlong.
Obviously, identification is a big factor in digging a blog like this, and the reason that the reviews varied so widely. For you parental types, Seven Seeds will most likely be an enjoyable place to stop on the web. I think the only thing that could stop Kadi is if she gets tendonitis from her pedal-to-the-metal posting schedule. Well done, Kadi, and don't forget to stretch those wrists from time to time!

------------------

Note from Diesel: Thanks, Frogster, for a nicely done review. And thanks for helping me get out from under the backlog of reviews. The Frogster is being modest when he says that he's a just a "number cruncher," by the way. It's true that this review is a summary of our reviewers' opinions, but it takes some work to sift through the disparate comments and provide a meaningful review. So thanks again, and here's hoping I can rope you into being a regular contributor.

Oh, and make sure you check out the Frogster's blog, The Frog Bog.

Mister Peace

Mister Peace got mostly solid reviews for its witty, intelligent writing. Several reviewers commented on its dull template, but evidently one reviewer's "dull" is another's "easy-to-read." Mister Peace is a mix of stories of daily life, observational humor and satirical pieces.

Some quotes from our reviewers:
It's a bit bland. More pictures or color. Writing is done fine, just spice it up.

The web design is lacking in OOOOMPH!!! But I love the pics that accompany your posts, especially the gopher :)

Belabored the point, had good ideas and they were well written but only amused, no LOL moments

This is a great blog, excellent sense of humor, well written and to the point. Good webdesign too, although its a little bit plain.

I absolutely adored many aspects of this blog. It's original, clean, funny -- not a lot to NOT like. Is this blog the "greatest thing I've read all day"? Probably not (kind of partial to a few others). That said, it IS good, and well worth a few more visits.

It's not an out and out humor blog, it's more slice of life.

Clean layout - not necessarily as funny as it is grumpy...but a good read all the same.

More bitter than funny, and while I know a lot of good humor stems from negativity, this blog just left a bad tasted in my mouth. I'm also not a big fan of needless profanity. The posts were longer than the content warranted but I appreciate the effort he takes to find up to date news pieces and comment on them for the lazy blog-surfers' sake. What's up with that blogroll? There's no real sense to how it's ordered and you can't really tell what the links are until you go there. A mix of blogs, and random other bits. He should have a separate link list for the various kinds of links he has. Otherwise, the blog is very easy to read, a simple format (although not much personality) and efficient.

A very solid blog. And hey, it's funny too! The template is a little bland, but sometimes simpler is better. Well done cupcake, well done.

I loved the content. Your writing is hilarious and the style in which you write is poignant and can't be missed. I will definately be coming back for more. The only down side was the layout. I found it too scrunched together and the links a little too tiny. Granted I have a pretty high resolution set on my monitor but in comparison, it's still small. Other than that, excellent read!

This blog's definitely silly, but none of the entries actually made me laugh.

I started off reading the article about Spiderman 3 and the Emo culture. At first I thought it was a serious piece, it took it's time getting around to the satiric parts. It was a long way to go for a weak punchline.

I'd say this blog is for people who are looking for sarcastic and silly commentary rather than laughter. As far as that goes, though, I still found the content to be a little weak.
Most of the reviewers seem to feel that Mister Peace fell short of LOL-level humor. The satirical news pieces, in particular, are a little long and dry relative to their humor potential. Maybe it's just me, but I find that very few people can effectively write fake news, because it's so hard to (1) not telegraph the punchline, and (2) be funny while sticking to the conceit of a news story. The Onion can do it; almost nobody else can. I'd be more willing to read this blog if Mister Peace were to extract the joke(s) from the news pieces and just post them as one-liners. The whole Spider-Man 3 piece, for example, could be boiled down to:
Spider-Man 3 was the most popular superhero movie of all time because it capitalized on the whole emo culture phenomenon. Don't think movie producers haven't noticed. This phenomenon is already spilling over into other genres. Warner Brothers has just announced they're filming a movie called "Teardrops on Pillows," in which Samuel L. Jackson plays a street-wise bounty hunter named Tyrone Teardrop who catches his quarry by befriending them and then betraying them in a profound way. In their emotionally fragile state, he arrests them while using his signature line ‘This hurts both of us’.
See, now that's funny, and it didn't take me 20 minutes to read.

But whatever, that's just my opinion. I've got a short attention span, so I'm constantly

The Satirical Muvver Speaks Out

The Satirical Muvver Speaks Out fared ok with our reviewers. The title confused some -- I'm not sure how many figured out that muvver = mother, and as for satirical... well, it really isn't. Sardonic maybe, but not satirical. And here's another pet peeve of mine, while I'm talking about blog titles: What is up with the blog title not matching the blog url? I don't mean to pick on Hayley, as lots of blogs do this, but Blogger urls are free. Pick a name and go with it. How the heck do you expect people to remember your blog url?

At least Hayley avoided using the terms "musing," "ruminations" and "ponderings." Anyway, sorry for the digression. On with the review:

Some quotes from the reviewers:
I can't help but being biased towards British people...but I am because I just love their vernacular. It's bloody fantastic! Great blog!

Only in Britian needs to jump the pond, some of the humor may be dry and getting lost with my American accent. Found myself scanning after two posts. Adam and Eve bit is typical men bashing --hahaha, God and Eve have their joke about Adam being made second. All Crumpet and no tee-hee.

Nice to see a non-American blog (not that American blogs are bad!), but the author needs to use less slang as non-UK readers may not understand the jargon. A really negative aspect is the side bar that travels for miles, and miles, and miles down the page. Some of the info there is a bit useless as well. The author should actually incorporate this info into her posts!

A very pleasant blog. Nothing to write home about, but pleasant, nonetheless. I see this as less "satirical" and more "slice of British family life" fare. Not funny "ha ha", but fun. That said, it's not quite my cup of tea.

This blogger is a good writer and some of the posts have good humor in them so I'd read again defintely, although the colours are a bit painful and something a little easier on the eyes might be better.

Real Life, which is bloody funnier than anything. Well written, some tongue in cheek, dark humour.

Layout could be smartened up a tad.

Very British, which makes sense, because she is... Good stuff all around.

I didn't really find this blog all that funny. It's cute at times, quirky, but not laugh-out-loud or really even crack a smile. It's seems that it's just a blog detailing a person's life with a couple lines of supposed humor thrown in. Good if you want to keep people updated on your mishaps, bad if you're aiming for something like a funny blog. And I'm a fan of British humor too but I just found it lacking. Also, the layout, mainly the color, is very off-putting. The purple with black writing can be a bit hard to read at times and just overall I didn't find the site aestetically pleasing. To help, I would recommend greater descriptions with cheeky additives as opposed to rambling out the story. I just find the humor extraordinarily subtle, too subtle in many cases.

Some of the posts are amusing, but the lack of commas irks me. Still, I'll come back; there's something fun about this blog.

Her sidebar is out of control! That being said, I found the content there much more entertaining than her actual posts. I like her overall energy and she seems like a fun person but her posts aren't focused and seem more "this is what I ate for breakfast today" than I like. But she's new at it and I hope she'll sharpen up her writing and get the feel for what is bloggable in time.

The purple & green template for this site makes me feel like I'm reading the incredible Hulk's own personal blog. Sadly, I am not. While the whinings of an occasionally funny British hausfrau may amuse some, it doesn't work for me. She writes well, etc., but the content isn't interesting and the humor just isn't there.

This is a nice personal blog with a lot of warmth. I wasn't sure what a "Muvver" was at first, but I managed to figure out that it actually means "Mother" - cute.

In spite of the title, the blog doesn't have very much satire. A lot of interesting stories of daily life and some sarcasm and wit. Nothing that caused me to laugh out loud, but I'd still recommend giving it a look.
It seems like whenever a British blog gets reviewed, people comment on how maybe the "dry" British humor doesn't translate across the Atlantic. On the other hand, there are plenty of American blogs that suffer from the "cute but not LOL funny" syndrome. I wish I could blame a cultural barrier when my jokes don't work.

In any case, 51 is a solid score. Good work, Hayley. I hope you find the reviewers' comments helpful.

Queen of Dysfunction

I'll go on record as saying that I like QoD. Sure, a lot of it is standard family blogging stuff, but I think she's aware of that and she has fun with it. She has a clever, self-deprecating style that I find more enjoyable than many writers who try very hard to be funny.

Our reviewers' opinions were mixed, but the overall impression was positive.

Some quotes from the reviewers:
I don't know what I like about her -- there's a funny anecdote in there, I just can't find it. Poor site design, and overly typical "angst-y" wife content left me flat.

It's not the content so much as the writing, the voice, that turned me off. It was like a Carrie whatshername from Sex in the City minus the relationship advice with adding bitching. I'm not a big fan of griping blogs only because they tend to get old quickly, especially if the posts remain in constant gripe. What can I say? It's not my type of haha blog.

A droll turn of phrase. The Queen Herself admits that she perhaps overdoes it on the mommy stuff.

This would have got a higher score, if it wasn't for the generic (and often annoying) Blogger css layout. Because that aside, this is a very amusing blog.

Although I did not find this blog particularly funny, I do plan on reading it regularly & have bookmarked it for future reading for her insightful posts.

I love diary blogs. At least there aren't any lolcat pics. Wait are there?

Totally adding her to my blogroll. She's hysterical, her ideas on motherhood mirror my own and to top it all off, she's really hot. Which has nothing to do with her being funny, but it makes me want to really hate her. And if any of the other reviewers claim she can't be funny because she's a mom, well, I'll just have to clobber them to death with my brownie spatula. This girl, is funny.

I will read it if I run into it but I won't go searching for it.

The blog gives an idea about the life and times of the author and that too in a humorous way. My only crib is about the use of a little profanity but that's just me.

The blog layout is good and simple but the widgets seem to run into one another (Esp. the profile and Archive widgets)

The blog is well-written, and amusing at times, but not particularly funny.
So there were a few gripes about the layout, but I get the impression that the reviewers who complained about the layout probably weren't really into the blog anyway. If you're looking for hysterical writing, this blog may not be the place to be, but QoD provides a reliable stream of witty commentary.
