Diesel Hi, my name's Diesel. I run this site. I started it as a lark, because all of the other humor blog directories I found sucked. Anyway, my own humor blog is Mattress Police - Antisocial Commentary. It's listed over there on the upper right. That's what's known in the biz as a "conflict of interest." Deal with it.

The Humor-Blogs.com Blog

SpeedCat HollyDale Page

I think it might be helpful at this juncture to provide a reminder in the form of a little background of HUMOR-BLOGS.COM's formation. It was indeed the result of the hyperactive imagination and attention span of Diesel, author and chief inspector of Mattress Police. He conceived of Humor-blogs.com as as a site listing humorous or funny blogs where one could go to get their laughs on as the name might imply. He had a guideline of what would qualify a blog as such and bloggers came a knocking. Then more bloggers wanted in and the gates were thrown open until even Edna St. Vincent Millay wanted in. Never mind that she's no longer alive. Not important. Our job is to find out if some of these bloggers are.

With that in mind, Diesel then conceived of a review process to "rank" the blogs in order to weed out some of the less than humorous blogs. Of course humor, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. The system is not perfect, but it does allow for each of the blogs to be showcased and rated and you the reader to judge for yourselves. Nobody is saying the blogger is not perfectly nice. Remember, this is not a cease and desist order to stop blogging - it's a review of the level of humor contained in the blog.

Okay, long intro over. I think this week's blog, Speedcat Hollydale Page runs into the not humor enough problem plaguing some of the recent reviews. I'll be brief as there's not much to add to the reviewers' comments below. This blogger's main post topic seems to be links and awards. In other words, not terribly funny. I guess a blog should have a gist but sorry SpeedCat, the links/awards/memes posts can work judiciously as filler posts - maybe once a week, not daily. I did find the post about posting pics with your "golf buddies" to be amusing though. See it wasn't a meme or a link, it was original content. Let's see what the reviewers had to say:

CategoryScorePoints

Writing5.233/5
Web Design4.232/5
Intangibles3.852/5
Read Regularly0.771/10

Percentile Rank: 5

The first 5 or 6 posts are nothing but tags/memes. How annoying. Save that forward stuff for emails. I didn't bother reading many of the other posts, they were either too long or put me to sleep in the first sentence.

I'm not getting funny from this blog. And again with the white text on black background. Huge turnoff for me. Very hard for tired eyes to read.

Is there anything funny in this blog?

Wow! I see plenty of awards for being funny, but less actual funny than I would like to see.

His conversational tone is engaging, but things like golf and blog awards and grandkids are probably best suited for people who like those things or know the person. In the archives, the most interesting things for me were things that had nothing to do with the most frequently blogged about topics.

Wish him luck, not for me though.

An amazing tour de force of being slightly funny - at least it got a laugh.

Not sure I saw anything really funny here. Lots of "award" news, but nothing I would care to read more of.

Further evidence that with a few exceptions (see George w. Bush) the American People do not understand humour.

ED NOTE: With all due respect, we may have deserved above, huh Yanks?
It was very amusing!

OOOOH, does this guy love blog awards. There was really not a lot of substance here as far as stuff that was funny. If I wanted to listen to a grown man talk like a teenage girl, I'd move back in with my parents.

Is it just me or does this blog just talk about awards?

ED NOTE: How long have you had these feelings of isolation, reviewer? Alas, it's not just you.

In summation:
Looks like a pre-y2k geocities page. Lots of great ego, but nothing to back it up.

Overall something was lacking in this blog in that it didn't really feel as though I were reading a blog, but rather browsing a classified ad with all the links. I would need more than a link to my blog to keep me coming back. There were too many distractions and links to make the reading enjoyable.

Your blog might benefit from a bit of decluttering and more posts of an "original" or humorous nature, then perhaps we can talk. Good luck Speed Cat and be well.

"a prey2k geocities page". That is a classic line

I agree Lisa, that just summed it up for me.

Very nicely done, G. This is a good reminder that memes and awards and stuff are fun and all, but every post you take up with that stuff is one more lost opportunity to be funny (or, for that matter, to do whatever else is is that you're getting the awards for). Personally, I find it hard enough to be laugh-out-loud funny when I'm actually trying my best to come up with original material.

I find it hard to be funny when I'm trying to be funny. I'm weird. Online people like that. IRL people...well, they don't sit next to me.

Diesel, agreed.

Bagel, somehow I don't think you have a real life. It's a guess.

First off, I actually agree with this review! If I had a blog that was "devoted" to humor, things might be different. I don't, and really have no intention to create one.
I would like to thank the people that took the time and effort to put together this post.
One reference to me - "listen to a grown man talk like a teenage girl" I found to be unnecessary.
I'm not really sure who made this verbal attack, but if it was to my face - this soft gentle 250 pound labor worker from Minnesota would crush you into a fine powder. (Not with my keyboard) Now THAT would be funny!!
Again, I do understand what this page is created for, and expected truth. That I have no problem with...just this one comment.

I will leave my blog the way it is, as I enjoy it mostly for the wonderful people that stop by on a frequent basis. That is what is important in my eyes.

As far as fitting in at Humor Blogs, I guess I'll respectfully disappear. I never fit the mold anyway.

Eric, with all due respect the site is called Humor-blogs.com. If your blog is not devoted to humor, why submit it in the first place and ask to have it reviewed? That quite frankly is why I never submitted my own blog to the site, no less request to have it reviewed. I didn't want to feel that my posts always had to be humorous.

Now your response to that comment is pretty damn funny and I couldn't agree more with you. It is not helpful, is mean spirited and actually just was out of context. I do have a problem with people just posturing instead of actually reviewing and that was sort of the case there. Even though I'm sure you don't need me to, I'd hold that reviewer's arms behind their back when you take aim.

I get that your blog is more of a mutual admiration society, if you will and that's fine. It's a nice place for friends to visit. But we're both in agreement on the humor aspect.

Thanks for taking the time to weigh in (no pun intended) and I appreciate your own candor. Remember even if not a member - you're always welcome at Humor-blogs.com.
