Diesel Hi, my name's Diesel. I run this site. I started it as a lark, because all of the other humor blog directories I found sucked. Anyway, my own humor blog is Mattress Police - Antisocial Commentary. It's listed over there on the upper right. That's what's known in the biz as a "conflict of interest." Deal with it.

The Pop Eye

G here again. Diesel said something about making a movie, I think. He promised me a bit part if I delivered a few batches of reviews. Totally plausible, wouldn't you agree? I think Vladmir (or whoever that tin guy is on his blog) is going to be in it.

This week we're reviewing The Pop Eye, a blog that gets a bit of its fodder from the world of celebrity skewering. That well is pretty deep -- unlike many of the celebs being skewered -- so The Pop Eye has a wide net to cast. Although I think BeckEye, the blog author, is leaning towards musical topicality, she is not above a well placed post about reality TV or her disenchantment with Catcher in the Rye.

The Pop Eye is nicely designed and although it may not quite qualify as a true humor blog, it is certainly written in a tongue-in-cheek style. I think that can be a problem when submitting oneself for review as a humor blog as the blog - your baby, which you have cuddled and loved and stayed up nights with and let sleep in your bed, it's spit up on your favorite shirt - whoa, I got confused there for a moment. Okay, I'm back. The point is that we all love our little blogs and want everyone else to love them too. But not all blogs fit the Humor-blogs.com niche, and this may be the case with The Pop Eye. Having said that, however, I found this blog to be more enjoyable than some which have received a more generous score. Let's look at the reviewers' input:

More of a music/pop culture blog than a humor blog. Well written, looks good, I personally am not interested in the content, but I can see where others would be.
It's funny but I wouldn't read it everyday. I'd probably look it up again and just read that day's post.
This blog had a few clever lines and some jokes that fell flat, at least to me. It needs focus and a little more shine, but there's probably a genuine funny blog here waiting to get out.
I won't say I'm hooked. The sidebar was more amusing than a few posts, but overall, there is cleverness here that, if tapped into, could spiral out of control. In a good way of course.
I like the blog - it's easy on the eyes, the writing is clear and has a nice, easy flow to it. However, it's not a humor blog! It doesn't attempt to be funny, and it succeeds.
I found this to be a very pleasant blog. I didn't read anything that had me falling on the floor in gales of laughter, but I did smile from time to time. BeckEye seems to be a charming woman, with a cute sense of humor. I wouldn't necessarily feel compelled to pop over to her blog on a daily basis, but that doesn't mean I didn't like her.
Nice blog with a slight celebrity gossip angle. A bit tame for my tastes.

Those were the nice ones...
Another celeb-based blog, don't people have any other interests in the world? And the individual blog vote buttons show a serious hint of desperateness to be liked. Have some confidence if you're going to be such a critic of those poor wealthy celebs!
It's not funny. It's not even quirky. It's a friggin' diary, fer cripe's sake.

ED NOTE: web log - blog: isn't that a friggin diary?

Slick, very slick, makes you sick, very sick.

ED NOTE: Okay, I think that last reviewer just wanted to show off their rhyming prowess.

Let's end on an up note, shall we:
Nice blog. Looks like the blogger has been around a while so she knows what she's doing. I like how she has interviews with other bloggers to add a personal touch. Although after a few posts answering questions from other bloggers I started craving more original content.

Some writing was funny, other musings were so-so. But with her personable approach to blogging, I can see how the blogger is likable among her peers.

I think that last review sums it up well. The Pop Eye, while not a great candidate for Humor-blogs.com, is still an enjoyable blog and worthy of a periodic read. I found her to be enjoyable and I'm a fan of anyone who can slip in an arcane Far Side cartoon reference right off the bat.

So BeckEye, keep doing what you're doing. I personally found you to be witty and charming, so there's that. Flat out humor blog? The reviewers have spoken. Perhaps not just yet, but I for one, have not written you off.

Next.

I have problems keeping mine not a music blog. That's what happens when you live in Brooklyn ;)

Well thank you, G, for your nice comments!

Thanks to everyone who spent the time and effort to give their honest feedback. Of course, I realized after putting my blog up on the chopping block that I probably shouldn't have because I'm not specifically in the "humor" category. I originally thought that blogs of any category, written in a humorous style, could be considered also but after reading some of the other reviews (while waiting anxiously for the axe to fall on me) I figured out that the reviewers are real sticklers on the blog category. I guess the title of the blog should've tipped me off. ;)

I guess the problem is that if I submitted my blog to a site called "Pop Culture Blogs," I wouldn't necessarily fit in there, either! I am consumed with pop culture, but I don't feel the need to be Star magazine, writing a post every time Lindsay Lohan takes a snort. They always say, "write what you know," so I write about the things that interest me. If anyone else - whether it be 200 people or 2 - finds that stuff interesting also, then I'm happy.

I try NOT to write a personal diary, so I'm not sure what the reviewer who wrote that was reading, but occasionally I'll drift off in to personal experience land. Like when I met Glenn Tilbrook. My blog was taken over by talk of him and Squeeze for all of August because of that!

For the person who said I was desperate to be liked because I had "voting buttons" up - I understand why you might think that, but let me explain. That particular site gives away $25 for the top-rated blogger each month. So...desperate for love? No. Desperate for money? ALWAYS. Besides that, a few of my other "blogfriends" are candidates so it's created a bit of a fun, little rivalry between us which, admittedly, wouldn't necessarily translate to a casual or first-time reader of my blog.

Even though I appreciate all the comments, I don't know what constructive criticism I can take away from the reviews. I guess I just won't try to pass it off as a "humor blog" again! But humor is completely subjective, so while it tickles me when other people think I'm cool and slick, I also get a kick out of the idea that I could actually make others sick, sick, sick. (And hey, that rhyming guy wasn't exactly Nipsy Russell, either.)

Anyway, I have no problems with my "50" score. I often jokingly refer to myself as "Jane Average," so it suits me well! Better to be in the middle than on the bottom, I suppose!

Bvllets, Brooklyn has a vibrant music scene for sure. Unless you feel some internal pressure for it not to be a music blog - let it roll. Of course your link leads to nowhere so we'd have to take your word for it.

Beckeye, you are very welcome. I myself (as I mentioned in last post) am not a Humor-blog member for just that reason. I am sure people would have a field day with my place. "WTF is so funny about Yom Kippur?!" Honestly I think the slant of the "Review Board" is skewered towards more each post designed as a humorous one. In fairness and as you pointed out, that why it's called Humor-blogs.com and not "Everyone in my Peronal Life thinks I'm funny.com. Also as you know, humor is very subjective and you may even find some comfort in the fact that a professional comedian's blog got panned several reviews back. Or not.

NOTE: I would have to defend Beckeye here on the three issues that she brought up that were particularly negative:

1) I did not agree with the "it's a friggin diary for cripes sake" comment at all. Yours was no more so than any other that I have read and seemed to cover a variety of topics including your sta, er I mean fondness for Glenn Tillbrook. (Squeeze still sounds great all these years later.)

2) I didn't think anything of the blog voting buttons any more so than any widgets or voting buttons on any other site. There was nothing cloying about your blog so I did not get "desperate to be liked". Now excuse me while I go check in to this $25 payoff you speak of.

3) Haha - see, "wasn't exactly Nipsy Russell" - that's funny.

I agree that for you, this review experience probably doesn't give you much to work with, but it doesn't hurt to have your blog listed on the blogroll with that pretty eye which may just send a reader or two your way.

What I take from this experience is the idea of editing out comments that border on malicious. Not funny. Not helpful. Also, each of us has our own blog community and any crossover to others is always nice for exploring but it's great to have your own comfy place to come home to. I think yours is such a place, so enjoy it.

Also thanks for being such a good sport in your response.
