Diesel Hi, my name's Diesel. I run this site. I started it as a lark, because all of the other humor blog directories I found sucked. Anyway, my own humor blog is Mattress Police - Antisocial Commentary. It's listed over there on the upper right. That's what's known in the biz as a "conflict of interest." Deal with it.

Hurty Elbow

Our reviewers were mostly positive about Hurty Elbow. The site's great name and clever logo had several of our reviewers laughing right off the bat, but the consensus seemed to be that the content didn't quite live up to expectations. As one reviewer noted, "Too much reliance on other blogs/sites work and not enough original content... Too much clutter and confusion."

Some quotes from our reviewers:
Not something I found very funny, although it appears to be fairly popular. Not my brand of humor.

The name of the blog gave me high hopes because I laughed for 5 minutes straight when I first saw it -- Hurty Elbow. HAHAHAHAH! The content wasn't as sharp as I hoped BUT it is promising and the site looks great.

Recaps of Man vs. Wild? Seriously? At least make them funny if you consider your site to be a humorous one.

Somehow it makes this type of blogging seem fresh and interesting. It caught my eye--and I consider myself quite an indifferent reader.

It's like he 'gets me' in the most intimate of ways. Could also be becaused I banged his mom in the late 70s and there's a 4% chance he's my kid.

The sidebars together (on the right side of the page) are almost the same width of the blog post section, and therefore are a distracting focal point from the blog post content.

I love the logo. I am never a fan of the double-sidebar, it just makes things too busy. This is fairly standard fare, not hilarious, but not unenjoyable either. "Not cute enough" is pretty good stuff.

I tried so hard to like this blog, but I just couldn't manage it. The 'click here to read more' drives me nuts, the colors made me think I'd had an aneurysm and there was just way to much linkage and embedded video.

The writer is obviously very good, and the site should work more at getting that writing up front.

Simple is better, and it's not funny when I'm that distracted.

There's some genuine hilarious content here. My only "criticism" would be the ads, because, well, I don't like being tricked into reading crummy commercials.

I just didn't get it. But in between there were a few comments that gave me a wry smile.

Top nav links take you to other blogs/sites...aren't nav bars supposed to be for navigating your own site? Attempts at original humor often not funny nor original. Tries to latch on to popular blogs like Boing Boing to enhance blog's own profile.

It's a good blog, well-written, but it's also very generic and similar to many of the popular humor blogs out there.

Once again, another sort of funny blog with some interesting premises like Not Cute Enough and some promise. And once again, another blog that doesn't have a posting schedule. Big minus for all the incomplete sentences too.

Finally, a man who is as funny as me! (almost as funny, let's not get carried away)

This went way over my head.

Many of the links did not open for me.

One of the best blogs I've visited, plenty to keep the grin on your chin.
So there you have it. Based on the reviewers' comments, I'd suggest getting rid of the ads (do you make any money on those? I have yet to make a dime on Google ads), and relying less on videos and links to other sites. Your writing and the site's name and slogan ("Comedy that's quite hurty in the elbow") suggest that you've got some serious humor potential. Let's see what you've got.

Trust me on the Google ads...you'll never see a red cent.

About those saying the links at the top of the page should be to the author's own site...I actually think that even though it looks like the links are going off-site, it's still linking to content by the same author.

That's the impression I got, anyhow. If that's not the case, sorry!!

Seriously...not to be mean or rude...but this site isn't funny at all...all the site owner is doing is commenting on work from other sites...that's NOT a humor blog. You can tell the site owner is trying to get traffic from "trackbacks" or by mentioning other popular sites in his posts.

Thanks for the critique! I appreciate the warm compliments and constructive criticism.

In response to Diesel and Joel on Adsense, I make just enough to cover hosting.

The off-site navigation link in question is for Celebrity Fiction. It's from the same author (me), but exists on a separate domain so regular readers don't have to deal with non-stop celebrity gossip if they don't want to. Also, so I don't feel pressure to update when I've nothing to say. It's also nice to categorize by celebrity.

From the sampling of comments, I'm surprised the review opened with the critique that the site relies on other blogs/sites work. What work from other blogs/sites am I relying on? I'm confused. Honestly.

You mean Crummy Church Signs doesn't shoot all those photos? Blasphemy!

The Cute Overload link's a frame of reference for Not Cute Enough and I put up ONN and Super Deluxe videos when I had writer's block. I also sifted through hundreds of pictures to pick out funny half-beards, and nope, I didn't take those pictures, but have you seen a half-beard collection on another site? I guess I can be faulted for making collections and finding anomalies in a pattern. I'd still consider it work.

However, have you seen Frank Lloyd Wright's Gingerbread House, Celebrity Names After Marriage, Pixar Plagiarism, Cremated Cigarettes, Horrible Headlines for Hurricanes, and Not Cute Enough on other sites?

I understand it's not everyone's brand of humor, but please don't accuse me of exploiting the work of others. That's a shadow my site's not casting.

Until later today when I post about the animation at www.IceCreamBunny.com. Why not? It's funny! Thanks again!

First - I'm never quite sure what to do with comments regarding the lack of originality on a site. I try to give an accurate impression of the feelings of our reviewers, and that was one sentiment that was expressed several times. I think that the main problem was actually that it wasn't clear to our reviewers that you were linking to content on another site that you also created. You could clear up some confusion by making that more plain.

If you can actually make enough to cover hosting with those ads, more power to you. You're the first person I've heard of actually making any money on them.

Anyway, take the review with a grain of salt. It's just the impressions of a handful of volunteers. Take it for what it's worth.

It's good to get a fresh take.

If that's the impression, it's definitely something I'll work on improving, along with limiting the clutter, and getting my writing to the forefront.

It's all helpful info. to hopefully improve the site, and I thank the reviewers for their say. Thanks also to Diesel for sorting through the reviews and for creating humor-blogs.com in the first place.

In regard to ads. It does make sense that happy readers and a larger audience are more important than covering hosting. I'll have to give it more thought.

sorry if I'm a little harsh in my review. I just didn't see any original content on the site. Even if there is some...I didn't see any off the bat nor with some scrolling and clicks. First impressions are everything.

And as far as relying on content from other sites, you kinda answered your own question: you basically find pics/items from other sites and comment on them.

You said: "What work from other blogs/sites am I relying on? I'm confused. Honestly."

Then a paragraph later you "sifted through hundreds of pictures to pick out funny half-beards, and nope, I didn't take those pictures, but have you seen a half-beard collection on another site? I guess I can be faulted for making collections and finding anomalies in a pattern. I'd still consider it work."

umm....aren't you basically admitting that you visit other sites and comment on their work? Am I missing something here? Even if you're "highlighting" their best work and digging for hours to find the best content...that's not original content. Did you write it? No. Did you take the picture? No. Yes, you may be putting your own "spin" on things. And you may have your own humorous twist on it. And kudos to that. But don't say you're confused about the lack of originality on your site and don't be surprised when critiques say you rely on other sites work.

I agree with the reviews that putting your writing to the forefront is a helpful change. And I know you have some funny and original things to say. And your humor may not be for everyone.

But obviously your approach is working for you so don't feel the need to make changes based on what people say. Just doing my job and offering my critique of the site.

Keep up the good work and best of luck with the continued success of your site!

Hurty -- gotta tell ya, i'm a fan. but that's just me. well, me, and, apparently, a lot of other "humor blog" reviewers. i completely understand what Chris is trying to say, but i think you deserve points for being creative. Not Cute Enough was pretty darn funny. at least it was to me. ; )

i think you've got some great stuff on your site, and i look forward to seeing more! snuppy
