Diesel Hi, my name's Diesel. I run this site. I started it as a lark, because all of the other humor blog directories I found sucked. Anyway, my own humor blog is Mattress Police - Antisocial Commentary. It's listed over there on the upper right. That's what's known in the biz as a "conflict of interest." Deal with it.

Conservathink

Conservathink is the first overtly political blog to be reviewed by the humor-blogs.com reviewers and, well, it did okay. Not great, but ok. Damian's conservatism may have hurt him a little, but the reviewers seemed to be pretty fair-minded in their reviews. He got dinged for the "dreaded black background," as one reviewer called it. Other than that, the reviewers were mostly positive, if not exactly bowled over by this blog.

Some quotes from our reviewers:
Nothing like alienating almost half of your potential readers with your blog title. The blog name sounds like a Fox News blog rather than what it is, which is a mildly amusing conservative version of the Onion... The sidebar and the bottom section have so much crap in them I can't be bothered to look at any of it. Overall, some good talent wasted on a bad idea and poor execution.

At first I thought this was a pretty decent blog until in my research into his archives I figured out he's been writing political humor and satire since he was 16. And he's good at it. Jerk. Otherwise, it's a very easy blog to get around and often funny.

I think there's some real promise here. Now that the writer has graduated from high school, I'm sure his style will mature.... Not a fan of the black background.... I think this blogger has a very cute sense of humor -- perhaps a bit idealistic, but I give him a lot of credit for his attempts to express himself in a fashion that's entertaining and fun. Very nice effort.

Fairly well-written and well-reasoned for an unabashedly partisan site. Humor would probably appeal more to conservatives (duh).

I have to say that I didn't want to LIKE this blog. A conservative, a Republican, but a really, really funny one, one that I happily hang out with any day. I'll definitely be back. I won't always agree with what he's saying, but I'll definitely enjoy it. Bill O'Reilly and the other freaks at FOX could definitely learn from this guy....

Good blog. Smart and funny - not really, really funny, but a good read.

I cannot tell if I'm just overall disinterested in everything, or if this blog isn't that interesting.

This site has everything bad about it. The worst template ever, political humor that isn't funny, and inconsistent posting. And what's with using the semi-colon so much?

Do the people who use this color scheme even truly want us to read their blogs at all?
If nothing else, this review should be a lesson to those of you who are still using a dark template. The lesson being that people hate dark templates. Take note, future reviewees.

My personal opinion (and the impression that I get from some of the reviewers) is that this would be a more interesting blog if the reader didn't know right off the bat that the author is conservative. Besides immediately alienating a lot of people, the fact that the reader knows the point of view behind all the posts detracts from their humor potential -- and I'm speaking as one who is sympathetic to this blog's ideological bent. No surprise = no funny. And who knows, Damian. Some day you might want to express an opinion that doesn't toe the conservative line. Then what? Even George Will has an occasional liberal moment on a lazy Tuesday afternoon when no one else is around. And I hate to tell you this, but there's already somebody doing the "Conservative know-it-all bit," and his name is Rush Limbaugh. And Ann Coulter. And Sean Hannity. And Michael Medved. And Dr. Laura. And, well, about 80 million other people. Maybe you could be the conservative guy who's not 100% sure of himself all the time. Now THAT would be an original gimmick.

So, as an ex-pissed off conservative (and currently mellow conservative), here's my advice for you to take or discard as you see fit: Change the template, read some P.J. O'Rourke and Dave Barry (and some Voltaire and Edmund Burke while you're at it), keep your options open, and keep writing. I'd like to see where you're at in a year or ten.

Huh.

What site were you guys reading???

One of the featured posts during the reviewing period attacked CREATIONISM.

Honestly, I thought that liberals were supposed to be open-minded.

And for the record, I subscribe to the liberal New Republic and LOVE P.J. O'Rourke and Dave Barry. Gotta love conservatarians.

I noticed that Creationism post and thought it interesting that it was on the blog. It was the first thing I thought of when I read a few of the reviews in this post.

I think Diesel's point would be well-taken, though. I truly think it's possible to be funny, entertaining, conservative, and NOT a know-it-all. It just has never been done before.

Dare ya to try!! :)

What in the hell makes me a "know-it-all"?

And for that matter, what is wrong with being a "know-it-all" if you can pull it off well?

I disagree with the criticism that he's alienating half the people right off the bat.

The fact is most blogs are alienating 90% of the people right off the bat regardless of whether they are political or not. It's the chosen niche or style that narrows the potential audience.

If you had a blog about Librarians, that would alienate a lot of people from the get go too.

Perhaps some people need to look up the word "niche."

Damian's pretty good. He's also young and has plenty of room to grow.

Damian - I don't really want to get in the business of defending reviews -- the reviews are what they are: synopses of the opinions of a handful of volunteer reviewers. Take it for what you will.

I will say, by way of clarification, that I wasn't saying that you never post anything that doesn't toe the conservative line, I was saying that's the impression one gets from the name of your blog. Think of it this way: Would you read a blog called 'Liberalthink'? I sure wouldn't. First, because I'm a conservative, and second, because I don't like people (even half-jokingly) telling me what to think.

For that matter, how about a blog called Islamothink? And over on the side bar it would say, 'Basically, my goal is to purge the Earth of Zionism. First through diplomacy, then by force. I believe that is what Allah commands.'" Gives you the warm fuzzies, doesn't it?

I guess the question is, who are you expecting to reach with stuff like that? Liberals? Not likely. You'd be better off starting "Liberalthink" and then filling it with conservative parodies of liberal thinking.

No charge for the idea.

My idea of "niche" is to find something that 100 people aren't already doing, that's all.

Damian, you're a good writer and I lauged a bunch of times at your site. And I'm firmly middle-of-the road in my political ideals. There's nothing at all wrong with being a know-it-all. You ARE good at it.

I just think your talent should be showcased in a setting that's more original, where more people would take notice because all those people Diesel mentioned aren't already doing it.

If you didn't sign up for the review to get some contstructive criticism or if my comments are coming across as anything other than constructive criticism, then I sincerely do apoligize. I really am meaning well here.

Personally, I think Damian's stuff is very well written and almost always funny. Any time you get reviewed there will be folks who just want to overly rip you or overly praise you.

Of course, the country's new pastime is ripping conservatives, so Damian just caught the brunt of the libs.

Keep it up, Damian: 25,000 visitors can't be wrong, right?

Damian is one of the most enjoyable writers I've seen, liberal or conservative. Good, witty writing should be judged based on the quality of the writing, not on the political bias. This is easier said than done but I believe that it's a double edged sword; when one endeavors to critique someone, this should be done in a responsible manner.

I enjoy reading Conservathinnin' and will continue to do so. Even though there's a perilous lack of Majestic Moose coverage.

PS I also laugh at Damian. Usually it's more of a cackle actually...

The quibbles with his template are nothing more than personal opinion (I happen to like his template), and, really, irrelevant.

I am glad that, for the most part, you didn't let your opposition to his politics cloud your judgement about his humor. That said, I would like to know what was clouding some of your judgements. His posts are positively hilarious, what with titles such as "Bloomberg tells GOP, 'Good-bye!'; GOP tells Bloomberg, 'Who the hell are you?'" and "Paris Hilton finds God; God relieved tests come back negative."

C'mon now, if you're going to call yourselves "Humor-Blogs Reviews," you should get yourselves a sense of humor.

I've enjoyed Damian's blog, and I think he's doing a good job. Who thought the kid from The Omen could be so funny.

And I don't think he 'alienates' liberals. A lot of them on the net afraid of Fox News, and think Keith Olbermann is "too right wing."

I know I'll keep reading him.
